Reading the Push and Pull of Relationships

Richard's simple framework — vibration and the body's seven chakras — for making sense of why some relationships feel effortless and others feel like friction.

Reading the Push and Pull of Relationships

Everything is vibration

Richard, our resident acupuncturist, has spent years helping guests untangle the confusing pull of close relationships — the excitement and irritation that can turn up in the very same conversation. His starting point is simple: everything, including you, is made of vibration. Denser, slower vibration shows up as solid matter, like the body. Lighter, faster vibration shows up as thought and feeling. You already sense this. Stand near someone and you instinctively register whether their character draws you in or pushes you away.

Everything, including you, is made of vibration.

The seven centres

Within the body, this vibration concentrates at seven points where clusters of nerves meet — the chakras. Each one radiates at its own frequency, which is why each is associated with a different colour and a different quality of experience: security and desire at the base, intimacy at the sacral, personal power at the solar plexus, love at the heart, honest communication at the throat, perception at the third eye, and connection to something larger at the crown.

In any relationship, each of your seven centres can land somewhere different — energised, neutral, or in friction — with the other person's. That's why you might feel deeply understood by someone one moment and completely at odds with them the next: different chakras are simply in the ascendancy. A strong pull at the heart doesn't guarantee ease at the throat. A powerful base-chakra attraction says nothing about how well your third eyes will agree on the world.

Why this helps

Mapping which centres are active in a particular relationship takes the judgement out of it. There's no single right shape for a relationship to take — only the particular dance of resonance and friction between two people, which will never repeat itself with anyone else. It also explains why relationships with even the people we love most rarely feel uniformly easy: with seven centres in play, the odds of harmony across all of them, all the time, are vanishingly small. Understanding that alone can be a relief.

We explore this and related ideas — vibration, the elements, the mind — during quieter moments of a stay here, alongside yoga and therapies that help keep your own vibration, as Richard puts it, in good order.
