The Truth About Fasting

The three misconceptions that stop most people from ever trying a fast — and why, done with care, fasting tends to feel calmer than people expect.

Three things people get wrong

Ask someone why they'd never fast and you'll usually hear one of three things. That they'd be starving. That it wrecks your metabolism. That it's a slippery slope towards disordered eating. None of these hold up well once you look closely — though the third deserves real care, which we'll come to.

On hunger: most people who fast well report the opposite of what they expected — less hunger after the first day or so, more energy, and a noticeable lift in mental clarity. With digestion switched off, the body redirects that energy elsewhere, drawing on its own reserves for fuel in the meantime.

Fasting has been called free medicine for good reason — when it's done thoughtfully.

On metabolism: what actually slows metabolism down is chronic, low-level undereating, especially alongside stress — not a defined, time-limited fast with a clear end point. Some research even points the other way, with longer fasts supporting healthier blood sugar regulation and insulin sensitivity once you come off them properly.

Fasting and disordered eating

This is the one to take seriously. Disordered eating is rarely about food itself — it tends to sit underneath, in emotional or physiological territory — and for anyone with a history of it, fasting is generally not the right tool, and any such history should always be discussed with us before booking. For everyone else, the distinction that matters is intention. A fast approached with curiosity and a nervous system that feels safe is a world away from restriction driven by fear or punishment. One is rest. The other is something else entirely.

Why people keep coming back to it

Fasting has been called free medicine for good reason, when it's done thoughtfully: a clear intention, an honest sense of what feels safe for you, and curiosity about what comes up along the way. Guests often tell us they're surprised by what surfaces during a week here — not just physically, but in how clear-headed and unexpectedly at ease they feel by the end of it. It's a large part of why so many come back, year after year, treating a week of fasting here less like deprivation and more like a proper reset.
